Michael says: “I’m not really sure what prompted me to watch this film, which basically tells three intertwined stories about guests at a college house party in Austin, TX. I guess I was swayed by some of the positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. I wasn’t all that impressed when I was finished, but ironically, since watching it, and seeing a couple of films about the same age group at the Tribeca Festival, I’ve come to appreciate co-writer/director Will Bakke’s skill as a filmmaker much more. THE GET TOGETHER basically takes a look at the time at the end of college and more importantly, just after, where the friendships of youth give way to life as a young adult. In the first story, Betsy finds out at the party that her best (and really only) friend and roommate has made plans for the future which do not include her. The second story involves cute couple Betsy and Damien who are back in Austin to meet Damien’s parents when they run into an old friend who invites them to the party so Betsy can catch up with the friends she left behind by moving to NYC. What Betsy doesn’t know is that Damien intends to propose. Those plans get derailed not only by the party, but by the third story, in which Caleb a fairly self-involved musician tries to rekindle things with his ex… who happens to be Betsy. I thought I was annoyed by the fact that the characters seemed so young, and that I just felt out of touch with them now that I’m an old man, but after seeing those films I mentioned above, that were much more superficial and banal (whoops… I’m stuck on that word) I can relate to Bakke’s characters much more as real people, even if they have a different outlook on life than I do. 3 cats
