Michael says: “Nice positive story about growing up trans with a supportive family. Co-written and directed by Amy K. Jenkins the family’s mother, there is an intimacy that might otherwise have been lacking. Still, I felt the overall film was a little too much like home movies, and lacked a creativity and originality that would have made it a stunner for me.
“ADAM’S APPLE has the benefit of access to the film’s main subject for their entire life, with a rejection of their assigned gender at birth manifesting at an incredibly young age. It was interesting to see Adam as he approaches his teen years embrace what for many would seem traits aligned with more toxic masculinity, and to watch his reactions to his family’s adjustment seem inflexible, but then we are reminded that Adam is a teenager, and that’s often what that age group does the best push back against authority and norms. As Adam matures, so too does his exploration of what it means to be male, and that is captured nicely.
“My difficulties with the film came form Jenkins, and both her directorial style, which as i said, seemed more like home movies strung together, to her general on-screen attitude, which was my own personal challenge. Ultimately, I settled on a rating of 3 cats
