Michael says: “After the razor sharp humor and directorial hand Seligman displayed in her debut feature, SHIVA BABY, coupled with the comic luminescence of lead actor Rachel Sennott, I was very eager to see what they would come up with next, in the provocatively-titled BOTTOMS. Needless to say this modern-day riff on them raunchy 90’s-style high school flick (my touchpoint is actually 1988’s HEATHERS) blows ROTTING IN THE SUN out of the water when it comes to the most in-your-face shocker of PIFF. (Ironic too, since ROTTING’s lead actor Jordan Firstman handled the Q&A with Seligman and Sennott post screening).

“Josie and PJ, two geeky, high school Senior lesbians just want to score with the objects of their affection — who happen to be cheerleaders. After a misunderstanding that makes some of the popular girls think the pair spent their summer in juvie — lending then some bizarre street credit — PJ locks onto a throwaway idea that they can gain popularity points by starting a Fight Club for girls at the school. And that’s all I’m going to say about this insanely over the top, funny, film that sharply skewers almost every trope, swing its feminist bat in huge, ridiculous arcs, all the while making great points and having a ton of fun. I have said several times, I haven’t had so much fun in a movie theater for year, and seeing BOTTOMS with a crowd is essential. Roars of laughter filled Provincetown’s Town Hall nearly throughout, and spontaneous applause erupted multiple times. And my reference to HEATHER was as to how I was watching the film, thinking, I can’t believe they actually just said/did that and got away with it.
“I honestly don’t know how the Chlotrudis SHIVA BABY fans will take to BOTTOMS, but I absolutely loved it.  5 cats

Diane says: “Starring my fave actor from SHIVA BABY, this teen comedy will prove to be forgettable, but I did love the choice of targets for satire (e.g., sexualization of the football team; two girls kissing is certain to distract a crowd from murder and mayhem) and the lengths to which the film went in its critiques. As a woman, I felt gratified and vindicated by a number of crazy scenes. I could tell how much fun the leads were having with their improvised dialogue.

“Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ was used to great effect.
“It took a while for the theater audience to warm up to the laughs, but there was applause at the end. 3 cats.”
