Nominations for the 29th annual Chlotrudis Awards were finalized by the film group’s nominating committee this past weekend, ahead of its March 19th awards dinner to be held at the newly renovated French Library in Boston’s Back Bay.

AFTERSUN, Charlotte Wells’ directorial debut is the leader of the pack, securing 6 nominations, including Best Movie, Director, and Lead Actor. It came out ahead of 3 films that each earned 4 nods: AFTER YANG, starring Colin Farrell in the sophomore effort from Kogonada; THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, director Martin McDonagh reunion with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson; and the Filipino LEONOR WILL NEVER DIE, a comic drama from debut director Martika Ramirez Escobar.

Joining AFTERSUN and AFTER YANG as nominations for Best Movie are the Japanese drama DRIVE MY CAR;  PETITE MAMAN, the latest offering from French director Celine Sciamma and Ruben Östlund’s wickedly funny Palme d’Or winner, TRIANGLE OR SADNESS. In all, 50 films earned nominations, with 26 countries represented among them. 19 of the films were directed by women, 3 of which were among Best Director nominees:  the aforementioned AFTERSUN and PETITE MAMAN, from Charlotte Wells and Celine Sciamma respectively, and Sarah Polley’s return to the directorial fold, WOMEN TALKING. – That’s a powerful 38% of all nominees.

In the Society’s most prestigious category, the Buried Treasure, the nominees are: Canada’s ANNE AT 13,000 Ft, whose titular lead’s world changes after a leap of faith; COMPARTMENT NUMBER 6, which follows a Finnish woman on a Russian train trip; Argentina’s THE DOG WHO WOULDN’T BE QUIET, an absurdist impending doom drama; HOLD YOUR FIRE, a compelling doc about an event in 1970s NYC that changed hostage procedures; PARIS, 13th DISTRICT which follows the lives of 4 French friends; and the animated Japanese film POMPO: THE CINEPHILE, a charming ode to filmmaking.

The Buried Treasure is the only category with eligibility requirements: nominated films must have earned less than $250,000 in its estimated U.S. theatrical run. Members submit 3 films they feel strongly were given distributional short shrift and deserve a wider audience.  Once the final ballot is set, all members voting in the category must verify that they have watched all or at least 5 of the nominated films.

Any context to the absolute rejection of Tar?

Hello! And yes, happy to address the lack of any nominations for TAR, which, for me anyway, was an outstanding film.

Because it is so difficult in this day and age to determine what is actually an independent film, he Chlotrudis Society has it’s on criteria for what is eligible. Anything produced by a major Hollywood studio is discounted, and where TAR missed out is anything released on more than 1000 screens is ineligible. TAR crossed that threshold, and was therefore ineligible for consideration. Thanks for asking!
