Chris says: “What the heck is WIG? A look at the 2018 revival of drag-fest Wigstock after a 17-year hiatus? An oral history of this annual grassroots event from its punk, mid-80s Tompkins Square Park origins to its 90s, mainstream-courting heyday (already captured in WIGSTOCK: THE MOVIE)? A summation of NYC drag culture since the early 80s, all the way to one of its contemporary outposts in Bushwick?

WIG is all of these things and pretty much of it is fascinating: archival footage of young Lady Bunny and RuPaul, priceless vintage stuff like Leigh Bowery’s infamous birthing performance, John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig then vs. Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig now, and the trajectory of a young trans queen’s triumphant appearance at the revival. However, between its narrative incoherence and occasionally dubious stylistic choices, this ends up an entertaining but scattered hop, skip and jump all over NYC drag culture rather than a definitive document of it.”
