Chris says: “At a time when filmmaking is more accessible than ever, it’s heartening to still see real talent emerge. Chloe Zhao has such a firm handle on what she’s trying to depict and express in this film about Native American rodeo cowboys in South Dakota that I was immediately attuned to both its poetry and authenticity. Had I not already known that most of the cast were playing versions of themselves, I might not have ever guessed it—that’s how strong Zhao’s direction is. The story itself one can surmise wholly from the trailer, but that barely diminishes its power. 4 cats”

Diane says: “Director Chloe Zhao found a story in a family she met on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation, and used them as her main characters, fictionalized. Lead Brady Jandreau plays the laconic Brady Blackburn, a 20ish horse trainer and locally famous rodeo rider who, after a head injury, can’t ride anymore but cannot stay away from horses. Lilly is his autistic sister, and Tim is his dad, who drinks and gambles the trailer rent away.

“Handheld camera, non-professional actors, simple story—and, as one reviewer wrote, I was a complete sucker for it. 5 cats
Julie responds: “This was 5 cats for me as well- Another hard one to watch at times – other times very easy – The bonus section interviews reveal some very interesting facts about the characters in the movie. This was the year of hard to watch films I think.”

Thom responds: “This was a beautiful film, so sad that it’s heartbreaking. Rarely do you find a character who you love so much and one that shows the decency of the best parts of humanity. It had a real Robert Bresson feeling about it with the non-professional actors.”
