Thom says: “It would be presumptuous of me to call myself a huge Jim Jarmusch fan but he certainly has had a large number of top-rated films with me including PATERSON, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, BROKEN FLOWERS, COFFEE & CIGARETTES, GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI, DOWN BY LAW, & MYSTERY TRAIN. He’s also coming off his best-ever film in the brilliant PATERSON. This film is really only a silly aside but I thoroughly enjoyed it form beginning to end. Since two of my 3 favourite living female actors are in this film (I’m guessing Isabelle Huppert was otherwise engaged) it was sure to please and I listened with bated breath to their every line. It also had going for it the bad review from the San Francisco Chronicle’s notoriously hack reviewer Mick LaSalle. It is a zombie film, as the title suggests, & its strength lies in the deadpan delivery that Jarmusch achieves from his first rate cast.. So while there are certainly gory scenes galore none of the film is scary at all. In fact, the knowledge that it is the head that must be attacked per zombie lore, the effect hear is unique and fun. The film takes place in small town America where slowly all its occupants turn into zombies. Murray, Sevigny, & Driver are all members of the town’s Sheriff’s staff and we follow them around as they try to put a quietus on the proceedings. Once again the spectacular Swinton creates an other-worldly character that in this particular instance might be an alien.”

Diane says: “I decided to see this even tho I’ve never wanted to see a zombie film, but I do like Jim Jarmusch and the cast he’s put together here. I’d heard that it wasn’t gory, but it is (warning to others who dislike gore). I enjoyed about 10% of it, including the deadpan delivery of the minimal dialogue.

“The most interesting bit was hearing the zombies mutter the object of their undead quest: one wants a Snickers bar, one wants her granddaughter, one wants wifi….. i am sure that zombie aficionados will get more out of it than I did.”
