Chris says: “If the English title sounds a bit generic (the original Finnish one translates as GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS), rest assured, the film is not. Mostly set over three consecutive Fridays, it’s about three teenagers: Mimmi (Aamu Milonoff) and Rönkkö (Eleonoora Kauhanen), classmates and best friends who work together at a mall frozen yogurt stand, and Emma (Linnea Leino), an aspiring figure skater who begins dating Mimmi. As Emma and Mimmi fall into the headrush of infatuation and young love while also trying to deal with their own very different personal problems, Rönkkö is just trying to figure out her own sexuality (or the frustrating lack of it.)

“GIRL PICTURE is an immensely likable indie dramedy that at times resembles a more contained, less stylized version of the great UK TV series Sex Education. All three leads are excellent; Kauhanen, with her blonde curls and inquisitiveness is even reminiscent of that show’s Aimee Lou Wood (though not to the point of seeming redundant.) What director Alli Haapasalo gets right about female teen relationships is a genuineness that’s instantly winning and only deepens the more we get to know these characters. It’s just about up there with the likes of OUR SONG, WE ARE THE BEST! and even GHOST WORLD (though far sweeter and less acerbic.) 4.5 cats
