Diane says: “I had shied away from this doc earlier, about a French vulcanologist couple who died in the line of work. But it is fantastic! Of course there are the mesmerizing shots of lava flow and eruptions, but also the over-sized personality of Maurice and the courage and wonder of Katia, the increasing drama of their own filmmaking in scary situations, the laugh-out-loud moments, the tragedy of lives and communities lost, the eclectic and delightful soundtrack. Chris says: “The treasure trove of archival footage shot by the subjects themselves is akin to sifting through old photographs–one gets a vivid sense of their feats and discoveries more so than who they necessarily were; however, since their work was their lives, that’s not a deficit. Miranda July’s narration does come off as superfluous at times but doesn’t distract too much from the whole. A solid contender for a Best Documentary nom. 4 cats
