Diane says: “Director Rossana Díaz Costa gets her own adaptation of this preeminent Latin American novel on screen in time for the novel’s 50th anniversary. Julius is the youngest of four children in a wealthy family living palatially in Lima, Peru in the 1950s. Because his parents are preoccupied with politics, social life, new partners, etc., he spends most of his time in the company of the household’s servants, who are indigenous people from the Andes. So he sees the damage done to the staff by, for example, his mother turning a blind eye to her oldest son’s abuse of the nanny. Julius, still a small child, begins to intervene to bring justice in this and other situations.

“I’ve read that the book’s language is unique, its style stream-of-conscious. The film version loses that sense–it is episodic rather than flowing, and some very short scenes do not contribute much. The second little Julius is a wooden actor, unfortunately. The director describes the work as a window to understand Peru, especially its current political situation. Bottom line: the movie has made me want to read the book. 3 cats.
“Seen at San Diego Film Festival.”
