Thom says: “The most noted element of seeing this film is that now I can start my 2015 Film List as it was my first 2015 film. The Wachowski siblings (brother & now sister) are revered by quite a few fans for their popular films BOUND, THE MATRIX trilogy, & CLOUD ATLAS. This is another science fiction movie, which except for BOUND is their entire output, so one would assume that they had perfected the genre.
“Jupiter Jones (Kunis, after BLACK SWA a major A-list star but who looks too much like Emma Stone) is stuck on a dystopian Earth as a cleaning gal but somehow has a genetic signature that indicates she will become a powerful leader with a rich inheritance that might well usurp the balance of the cosmos, or some such thing. Caine (Tatum, not at his sexiest) an engineered rogue hunter, comes to Earth to take her to a planet that is ruled by the most nefarious Balem Abrasax (Redmayne in yet another bravura performance that should garner him a Supporting Actor nomination, after his expected win in this year’s Oscars for THE BEST OF EVERYTHING) & his equally wicked brother who tries to get Jupiter to marry him. There are all the extraordinary special effects that we come to expect from the Wachowsky’s, the never-ending action sequences, and the grand otherworldly vista expected from all films of this type. But in the end it’s more than a little silly. I was thrilled to see Maria Doyle Kennedy get a role in a major film as Jupiter’s mom after her sensational work on THE TUDORS & ORPHAN BLACK. 3 cats”
