Michael says: “I’m not a particular fan of male characters in film or literature who don’t want to grow-up. I’ve always had a little trouble with PETER PAN (although admit to really enjoying the 2003 film version). FULL GROWN MEN is writer/director David Munro’s feature debut, and it tells the story of Alby Cutrera, a man in his mid-thirties who longs for nothing more than to be a child again, playing with his action figures and lying on the couch all day. This, much to the dismay of his wife, who kicks him out of the house until he can learn to grow up. While temporarily indulging in his fantasy and living back home with his mother, Alby decides to seek out his past, and his best friend Elias Guber, who he hasn’t seen for years, after his mother’s caretaker suggests that Elias hates Alby now. When Alby finds Elias, he finds his friend teaching at a school for children with special needs, and while not exactly hating him, he has certainly moved on with his life, and has some unresolved issues stemming from the endless stream of pranks Alby played with Elias as the perpetual butt of the jokes. What follows is a road trip to Diggityworld where Alby learns about life from the various odd people he encounters along the way.
“While I found Matt McGrath (THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE, THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB; BOYS DON’T CRY) annoying and unconvincing as Alby, I quite enjoyed Judah Friedlander’s (AMERICAN SPLENDOR) performance as Elias. The film also features some fun cameos from Alan Cumming, Deborah Harry, and most hysterically Amy Sedaris (‘Tina short for Vagina.’) Unfortunately, fun cameos do not a good movie make, and this one just didn’t do it for me. Director Munro calls FULL GROWN MEN a character study, but there wasn’t much about this particular character I was interested in. 2 cats
