Michael says: “SKY BLUE is a bit of South Korean anime that fails (for the most part) visually, and fails bigtime in terms of story. It’s funny that I wasn’t expecting an anime film to fall prey to the utterly banal conventions of big-budget Hollywood storytelling, but why shouldn’t it? In the future, the privileged live in Ecoban, a living city that protects its inhabitants from the toxic environment that global warming has wrought on the planet. The ‘diggers,’ those not wealthy or privileged enough to live in Ecoban, work to provide the city with the carbon it needs to survive. The cardboard cut-out villains of the piece don’t give a whit about the oppressed diggers, while the rebellious diggers, while rough around the edges, have good hearts like the marines in ALIENS. The heroine of the piece is Jay, although heroine is a bit too strong a word. She isn’t really allowed to do all that much. She’s tough (a member of the security team of Ecoban) but mainly she’s just the pivotal character loved by one of the villains, and the hero, Suha. Oh, and Suha… what a joke. From the breathy hushed tones in which he was voiced, to the impeccably handsome face and pure heart, Suha is just laughable. While it was impressive (as Tom pointed out) to see an animated film that still used hand-drawn cells for some of the film, the art overall was fairly mixed. The trailer we saw for STEAMBOY that preceded it was far more impressive in a fraction of the time. I’m bored of my review. It’s a reflection of how I felt at the movie. 1 ½ cats”
