Philip says: “Derek Jarman is a revolutionary filmmaker. I hate to think of him in the past tense. If you don’t understand the enormous vacuum that was left from the devastation of AIDS, watch Jarman’s EDWARD II, nearly 20 years old and tell me who has done anything even remotely close to this brilliant since 1992. It devastates me that Jarman was taken from us so soon. EDWARD II is based on the Christopher Marlowe play. It’s a pro-queer, in-your-face, political, romantic tragedy of epic proportions. Edward (Steven Waddington) finds his reign questioned when he brings his love, Gaveston (Andrew Tiernan) to the court. The lovers face hatred from the queen (Tilda Swinton), the head of the military (Nigel Terry), and many of his father’s inner circle. It’s high drama mixed with early 90’s politics. There are appearances from Outrage. And in the middle of it all, at the height of the tragic love story, Annie Lennox appears singing Cole Porter’s, Ev’rytime We Say Goodbye. Absolute perfection. A modern-day classic. A must-see. An obvious 5 cats. Dear Derek. We miss you so much.
