Chris says: “Two intertwined documentaries for the price of one, following a family of vintners in France and father-and-son cannabis farmers in Northern California. While it partially draws parallels between the two sets of subjects (in particular focusing on the grown sons/potential heirs of each business), it’s often more fascinating for the contrasts that emerge. While both face hardships due to climate change, it’s telling that the cannabis farmers are more in debt to government and industry regulations.

“There’s enough material in the recent legalization of pot cultivation for an entire feature, but the vintners’ footage suggests a possible future this emerging industry could settle into, albeit one just as risky and beholden to a plethora of conditions. WEED & WINE is attractive and slick (maybe too much at times–I could’ve done with less slo-mo shots) but not without insight into two different industries and a candidness about the successes and failures of its subjects. 3.5 cats
