Diane says: “Or, by its more appropriate international title ADELE: CHAPTERS 1 AND 2. A.k.a. the three-hour lesbian sex movie.
“I had expected a happy movie: girl discovers her sexuality, finds a thrilling blue-haired partner who opens her eyes to the world, lives happily ever after. But it’s more of a downer.
“Adele reminded me of FRANCES HA , a young, urban woman lacking in confidence who is tentatively engaging with adult life. Frances, though, was richer in quirks, talent, and personality. Adele is kind of a sad sack, carried along by others and not recognizing her own worth.
“Sex scenes can, I suppose, be sexy, entertaining, and/or emotional, but most importantly, reveal things about the characters. The very long (individually and cumulatively) sex scenes in BLUE lose any of those qualities way before their repetitiousness has ended.
“Particularly good in BLUE are the cinematography, the gorgeous colors, and the acting by the two leads. A mid-movie confrontation between them does not seem grounded in what we know of them, though. Director Abdellatif Kechiche disappoints with this portrait. It starts out strong and gets weak. 3 cats”
