Chris says: “Given the copious bodily fluids on display throughout, I can see why A24 was sheepish to give this a wider release. David Robert Mitchell’s (IT FOLLOWS) only real flaw here is that he made a film that simply does not scale the heights of all those he pays homage to (VERTIGO, THE LONG GOODBYE, MULHOLLAND DR, etc.). Once one gets past that, however, there’s so much to love here–the gonzo scene where Andrew Garfield’s perpetually stoned slacker-hero (his best performance since THE SOCIAL NETWORK) confronts ‘The Songwriter’ is already iconic in my mind. Startling, calculating, beautiful and ridiculous, I’m so glad this film exists, but be warned: your mileage may vary wildly.”

Julie says: “I watched UTSL over Christmas Eve late and finished it Christmas day, and ended up loving it!

“It is very Lynchian  and can best be described as a neo-noir black comedy conspiracy thriller. It’s a fun watch!

“I have to say that some moments I had to laugh loudly out loud as they were just so funny and the music worked so well at many of those moments.

“Having lived in LA I appreciated different elements there regarding locations, architecture and production design.

“Andrew Garfield was wonderful in this movie as the pattern seeking slacker.  4.8 cats!!!!!!!

“My first thought after watching the first(only ?)  bodily fluid exchange scene was you get what you pay for and I was pretty turned off to this movie. It took a few months to come back to it. I decided to give it another shot since it was on Chris K’s year end list. After watching the movie in full I thought that first bodily fluid exchange scene had absolutely no point to being in the movie and can imagine it turning off other people as well. They did have something happening in tandem that was important but I am pretty sure if that were skipped one would still be able to pick up all just fine. In fact there are so many things going on that a second watch is almost mandatory to pick up on everything you should be picking up on.”
