Diane says: “I’ll put UNCLE FRANK a notch above a Hallmark movie. An Amazon original by Alan Ball (screenplay, AMERICAN BEAUTY), this 1970s-set drama uses the perspective of adolescent Beth (well played by Sophia Lillis) who yearns for something more than Creekville, South Carolina can offer. She is captivated by her Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany) who moved to NYC years ago and hides his life as a gay man from their traditional (and abusive) Southern Christian family. The family scenes put me a little in mind of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

“As much as Ball seems not to know that films have moved on to more subtle disquisitions of this plot, I suppose there is still an audience for it. Uncle Frank’s longtime partner Wally (helmer Ball’s real-life partner) wins us over early with his quick changes between deadly serious and bubbly sweet. 2.5 cats.”
Chris says: “Very conventional for Alan Ball, but if I squint I can make out glimpses of the sensibility that made Six Feet Under so good at the time (if not what made it unique.) Paul Bettany and Sophia Lillis are the best of a not-bad ensemble. 3 cats
