Brett says: “Martin McDonagh paradoxically blasts the audience with deadpan in another highly ironic and character-driven film that adds to an already near-pristine catalog of acclaimed hits from the director. THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN fits snugly into what might be the inaugural representative of a tongue-in-cheek subgenre that can only be identified as anti-bromance.

“Best seen without any previews or pretext, McDonagh unfolds an unusual matter-of-fact external conflict that is so blatant that audiences and protagonist Pádraic (Colin Farrell) seem to have trouble taking it at face value. From there, a series of quips, banter, deliciously on-point colloquialisms, and local color accessorize the plot involving a widening distance that is growing between two friends.

“It is an easy enough plot to confine to a one paragraph blurb, but the cinematic nuance and tonal crescendos are the experiences that amplify this tightly knit screenplay. This is one of the most memorable character portrayals of the year.

“THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN is a film from director Martin McDonagh and is written by McDonagh as well. It stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan.”

Chris says: “This makes a lasting impact: for the striking, evocative landscapes, the performances (esp. Colin Farrell), the well-executed narrative turns and the confirmation that an isolated place, no matter how striking or evocative can be heaven for a few days and deadening for an eternity. 4 cats
