Chris says: “Lynn Shelton’s first feature in five years (she’s directed a lot of TV in the interim) might be her best. Cynthia (Jillian Bell) and her partner Mary (Michaela Watkins) return to the former’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama to receive her grandfather’s inheritance: a sword from the Civil War, along with questionable documentation positing the Confederacy as the war’s true winner. They attempt to sell this potentially valuable item to a slew of local rednecks with the help of Mel (Marc Maron), a laconic pawn shop owner who has his own issues regarding his addict ex-girlfriend (played by Shelton herself) and his hapless employee Nathaniel (Jon Bass).

“Out of this, one would hardly expect an inspired, screwball romp along the lines of FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, but that’s what materializes, mostly thanks to the sharp ensemble—Maron, of all people in particular, exhibits real growth as an actor here, equally adept at deadpan humor and convincing pathos, while Bell and Watkins have great chemistry while each fully embodying distinct characters. Shelton’s ease at letting this talented cast improvise and play off each other is always apparent, making for one of the funniest, most satisfying indie comedies in a long time. 5 cats
