Diane says: “Director Rodrigo Reyes uses some unorthodox methods in this doc, about a young Mexican man in California, Sansón, who is in prison without parole. Reyes, as part of his day job, served as Sansón’s court interpreter years ago. Wanting to tell the young man’s story—not an uncommon one—but restricted by prison rules, Reyes ends up using surrogate actors, including the next generation of Sansón’s family in Mexico. But the combo of storytelling, reading of letters, and meta commentary on making the movie diminish the story rather than enrich it. I’d recommend a pass.
