Thom says: “Jim Jarmusch has had a long, storied, varied, nearly historic career with few missteps. PERMANENT VACATION (1980) (2 cats), STRANGER THAN PARADISE (1984) (4.5 cats), DOWN BY LAW (1986) (5 cats), MYSTERY TRAIN (1989) (5 cats), NIGHT ON EARTH (1991) (4.5 cats), DEAD MAN(1995) (1.5 cats), GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI (1999) (5 cats), COFFEE & CIGARETTES (2003) (5) cats, BROKEN FLOWERS (5 cats) (2005), THE LIMITS OF CONTROL (2.5 cats) (2009), ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE (2013) (5 cats), & GIMME DANGER (2016) (3.5 cats).

“PATERSON might well be remembered as Jarmusch’s best film. It’s a quiet but potent drama that resonates long after viewing. It’s about a Paterson, New Jersey public bus-driver named Paterson, whom is also a poet, not as yet published, but very talented. His lovely, fireball wife Laura who is an interior designer & very creative at cooking, also makes her own dramatic clothing, moreover wants to become a cupcake entrepreneur as well as a Country & Western singing star. They own an adorable bulldog (Marvin) & every night he walks Marv into a local rundown bar where he has a celebratory mug of beer while conversing with the charming bartender/owner & interacting with the motley regulars that co-habit the bar. Of special note is the clarifying performance of the fascinating Adam Driver. When I discovered him in 2012 in the trendsetting GIRLS which lasted 6 sensational years on HBO, (Lena Dunham has achieved her justified status from the great series) I fell instantly in love with him and in the 5 short years since then he has become a superstar, as unlikely as that seems. Still, this is his best role and the calmness he brings to his enigmatic character is breathtaking. The quiet anger he brings to his reaction to the catastrophic accident that befalls him is film magic of the highest order. How remarkable it is that such energy & thoughtfulness can combine in something so genuine & real. 5 cats

Michael says: “Tonight I decided to watch one of the films that Chlotrudis picked as the best of the last decade that I hadn’t seen. I chose #6, Jim Jarmusch’s PATERSON. This was a film that was also nominated for Best Movie, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, and Editing at the 24th annual awards in 2018. I’m somewhat hit and miss with Jim Jarmusch, and I’m not a fan of Adam Driver, the lead, so I never saw the film. I am so glad I finally did. I just loved it. I’m so glad it got so many nominations, and that Jarmusch won Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

“For the few of you who haven’t seen it, PATERSON chronicles a week in the life of a bus driving poet named Paterson, so was born and raised, and lives in Paterson, NJ. He has a beautiful, quirky Indian wife, Laura, and the two of them share a simple, life filled with contentment. Their life has a certain poetry to it, a certain quotidian rhythm that at first i thought, is this the whole movie? But as it continued on, the beauty and humor emerged. Each morning, Paterson wakes up between 6 and 6:30am, eats his Cheerios, walks to the bus garage, writes some poetry and spends the day driving his bus, listening to the stories passengers tell each other. At the end of the workday he goes home, chats with his adorable wife who tells him about her day, spent painting, making cupcakes, or practicing her new Harlequin guitar with dreams of becoming a famous country singer. They have dinner, then Paterson walks his personality-filled bulldog, Marvin, and stops by the local bar for a beer. There is interacts with the various regulars before returning home and going to sleep.
“Everything about PATERSON is nearly perfect. The story, the acting, the cinematography, the editing, the music… I was thoroughly enchanted. Thanks Chlotrudis members, for making sure this film got the recognition it deserved. 5 cats
