Thom says: “While I have a great admiration for Jeffrey Kagel (Krishna Das) on turning his life around a making a sizable contribution to the world scene, I wasn’t all that swept up with this film, mainly for the simple reason I’m driven to near madness listening to his hugely successful Kirtan chanting expertise. While in the bloom of youth Kagel was chosen to be the lead singer for the band that would burst on the scene as Blue Oyster Cult but he declined the offer. Of course, BOC went on to release one of my favorite songs, former #1 for me ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’. After freaking out from drug abuse he sold all his earthly possessions and set off for India in search of the obscure Indian saint Neem Karoli Baba. While under the saint’s guidance he battled with depression and his addiction to drugs to finally emerge as a Kirtan chant master who travels the world as a spiritual teacher and musician with followers in the thousands, if not more. My viewing companion like the film far more than I did. 2.5 cats
