Chris says: “Billy Tipton, a jazz musician born as a woman who presented himself to the world as a man, is obviously an intriguing subject for a documentary, but it’s actually only a part of this one. NO ORDINARY MAN spends more time contextualizing Tipton for the modern trans community, both by featuring trans-masculine actors auditioning to portray Tipton and also interviewing them about their perception of him and their own experiences. While it might’ve been nice to know a little more about Tipton’s art and career, the unconventional approach is fresh and enriching and it feels right for this day and age. 4 cats
