Une affaire de goût

Kevin says: “Deeply layered film that reminded
me of WITH
A FRIEND LIKE HARRY
…. A young man played by Jean-Pierre Lorit is hired
by a filthy rich tycoon (Bernard Giraudeau) to be his “taster.” Basically,
he tastes the man’s food and gets paid $50,000 for it. However, a stange
and deeply complicated relationship develops between the two men, with disastrous
consequences (if that isn’t vaguely forboding enough lol). I liked this
film quite a bit. It’s beautifully filmed and very well acted by Giraudeau
(he was in François Ozon’s WATER
DROPS ON BURNING ROCKS
) and Lorit. Also, Florence Thomassin turns in
a top-notch perf. as Lorit’s girlfriend. The narrative is told in a circular
fashion that plays out very smoothly. Somehow, I felt a little distanced
emotionally from it though.” 4 cats

Laura says: “Cowriter/director
Bernard Rapp tells his tale in flashbacks from a present day investigation
into an unknown crime. While there have been many films which investigate
the transference of personality, there have been fewer on the subjugation
of it. Rapp’s psychological thriller plays like an inverted version of Joseph
Losey’s “THE
SERVANT
” as seen through the gorgeous rot of Peter Greenaway’s films.”
