Chris says: “An unlikely friendship develops between 13-year-old Sammy (Miya Cech), who has been acting out in the year following her mom’s death and Margot (Rhea Perlman), an eccentric, older magician who becomes her mentor. Director Kate Tsang’s feature debut manages to be playful and scrappy while also seeming a little slapdash and derivative at times. The best moments usually occur when Perlman, veteran star of ’80s sitcom ‘Cheers’ is onscreen; it also helps that her character, who has her own past demons to confront, is more novel than Cech’s teenage delinquent. An enjoyable trifle. 3 cats

Toni says: “A teenage delinquent teams up with a surly children’s party magician to navigate her dysfunctional family and inner demons.  Kate Tsang previously worked in in shorts and animated series such as ‘Steven Universe’, so it is nice to see her debut feature film.  Initially the Sammy character was unlikeable but she grows on you and there is good yet tentative chemistry between her and Margot. Rhea Pherlman shines as a tough cookie and mentor as Margot, with a complicated backstory and motivation to peform magic.  The magic itself is impressive, with subtle special effects assisting.  3.5 cats
