Thom says: “LITTLE WOMEN has been somewhat of a Hollywood staple over the years with adaptations of the Louisa May Alcott classic coming out in 1918, 1933, 1949, 1994, & 2018, not to mention the innumerable television versions. I’ve seen the 1933, 1949 & 1994 films and realistically can’t say I was overly delighted with any of them, so this was a complete, overwhelming surprise. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been because I adored Greta Gerwig’s first feature LADY BIRD and the cast is exemplary. But what Gerwig has done here is not just capture the special spirit of the story, she’s actually enhanced and enlarged a masterpiece of gentility, bringing it up to a modern stance while enlightening us with the historic references. It is also amazing how much drama can be wrought from a story around an entire group the people that are decent, considerate, & truthful. Laura Dern as the March sisters mother is a living saint and she shows that while love might not be the cure it’s at least a common ground. It took me awhile to fit into the rhythm of the constant going back and forth in time but the time-shifts finally work greatly in its favour. Since I know there are some died-in-the-wool librarians out there, has anyone ever read LITTLE MEN? Maybe Shia LeBeouf could make a version? 5 cats
