Michael says: “This delightful Irish film is another version for a high school rom-com, that follows a lot of the standard framework, but the main difference here is that Eddie is gay (and deeply closeted) and he’s dating Amber, a siimilarly closeted lesbian. With their respective love life seemingly of great interests to their fellow students, and each starting to get a reputation for being different, the two decide to start dating… rather, pretend to be dating… to throw their school chums off the track. Amber knows she likes girls, but being stuck in a backwoods Irish village , and having recently endured the death of her dad, she’s just assume fly under the radar where High School gossip is concerned. Eddie, on the other hand, is feeling pressure from his dad to follow in his footsteps and entering the military, and while he spends an inordinate amount of time drawing penises in his notebook, and shudders at the thought of having to touch the breast of one of his classmates while trying to convince them all he’s straight, he’s not entirely convinced that he’s gay.

“Eddie and Amber start off reluctantly hanging out, but the two find they have a lot in common and enjoy spending time with each other. Skipping school one day and finding themselves in a gay pub in Dublin, Amber even meets a girl she’s attracted to. Eddie is similarly attracted to  a young man that he dances with, but when he sees one of his fellow military wannabe trainees, he freaks out and dive deeper into the closet. He even convinces himself that maybe he and Amber should date for real and that he’s falling in love with her.
“This is writer/director David Freyne, after trying his hand with a zombie flick called THE CURED (featuring Elliot Page — as Ellen Page). I didn’t see that one, but I’ve got to imagine DATING AMBER is something quite different. It helps that his young leads, Fionn O’Shea, and Lola Petticrew are engaging, attractive and can act. This is a heartfelt, cleverly written look at the still scary coming out process for queer kids. It’s definitely a coming-of-age story, with appealing leads, and strong support. Emotionally powerful and cheeky all at the same time! 4 1/2 cats
