Michael says: “Big, dumb, super-hero action film? Check! Big-budget blockbuster written and directed by a couple of women, starring four kick-ass ladies as the costumed protagonists? What, what? Yeah, you got the right. Borrowing loosely from a DC Comic made famous by Gail Simone, and turned into a vehicle for popular character Harley Quinn, BIRDS OF PREY doesn’t stray far from the R rated new breed of violent superhero flick, but it does have a decided female perspective that, for me anyway, makes it all that much more worthwhile, and entertaining. A real romp… Margot Robbie works hard… hard enough to get me to enjoy an overused character. Nice to see Rosie Perez in an action film, and surprise Jurnee Smollett as the Black Canary! she got her acting start in the fine indie film, EVE’S BAYOU way back in 1997 (and recently starred in the TV show ‘Lovecraft Country.’ 4 cats”
