Thom says: “Gorgeous,
super-talented Nicole Kidman has had such a strange career. She did
finally win an Oscar for her great Virginia Woolf reading in THE HOURS,
which was more of a supporting role, but why quibble? The only thing
wrong with her career is her agent for throughout her run at the top of
her profession she’s been in some really terrible clunkers like DAYS OF
THUNDER, FAR & AWAY, THE PEACEMAKER, MOULIN
ROUGE
, AUSTRALIA, EYES WIDE SHUT, BEWITCHED, THE OTHERS, THE
STEPFORD WIVES, & NINE, a
large number of mediocre fare like THE HUMAN STAIN, BIRTHDAY GIRL, COLD
MOUNTAIN, BIRTH, BILLY BATHGATE, & MALICE, & then all the great
ones like FLIRTING, THE HOURS, DEAD CALM, STOKER,
THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY, TO DIE FOR, DOGVILLE,
FUR, MARGOT
AT THE WEDDING
, RABBIT
HOLE
, & THE
PAPERBOY
.

“Here she plays Christine, a woman who wakes up every morning with no
memory at all of any previous day. Her husband Ben (super accomplished
Colin Firth) has to tell her every day what her past life was like. And
every day, after he leaves for work, she gets a call from a mysterious
doctor who tells her that she has a hidden video in her home that she
adds to every day as she finds out more about her life. Kidman &
Firth give it their all to establish a creepy mood but the film never
really takes off. Worse still, Mark Strong, playing Dr. Nasch, seems
like he’s acting in another story. Not much of it makes any sense, but
it was rather fun to watch. The ending of the film was one of the worst
I’ve seen in the past two years. Damn those test audiences. 2.5 cats
