Michael says: “I decided to check out this trifle of a film because Daniel Auteuil (THE WIDOW OF ST. PIERRE, THE GIRL ON
THE BRIDGE) was the star. Shades of THE CLOSET, APRÈS VOUS, is, for the most part, a rather tired romantic comedy. When Antoine, a successful maitre d’ in a Paris brasserie, stumbles across Louis during an attempted suicide, he reacts instinctively, saving the young man’s life. Afterwards, he can’t seem to shake his good Samaritan tendencies, taking Louis under his wing, much to his girlfriend’s confusion, and tries to help him get his life back on track. He even gets Louis a job at his restaurant, as a sommelier, despite his awkwardness in social situations. The true cause of Louis’ despair comes in the form of his old love, Blanche, who dumped him. Antoine tries to play matchmaker, bringing the two back together, but after he meets Blanche, he finds his reaction to be rather surprising. I’m sure you can guess what that reaction is! Despite the tired plot, and not much more than mild humor, APRÈS VOUS does manage to hold on to some dignity with an ending that doesn’t make everyone happy, or tie up all the loose ends, but is still pretty expected. Auteuil should stick to more serious work, and just wait until you see him in Michael Haneke’s CACHÉ. 2 ½ cats
