Michael says: “As many of us are viewing films for nomination purposes, which is less than a month away, I’ d like to put in a plug for Jeremiah Zagar’s WE THE ANIMALS, now available on streaming on Amazon., and on DVD through Netflix. Based on a stream-of-consciousness, abstract novel by Justin, Torres I was suspicious of any attempt to create a narrative film from the source material. The story follows three boys, bothers in a Puerto Rican/American family filled with unrest. While two of the boys follow the footsteps of their macho father, the youngest boy discovers that he needs to chart his own course amidst the chaos. Zagar captures the abstract nature of the book wonderfully and the result is creative, hard-hitting and powerful. I would recommend this film. 4 cats”
Julie says: “I agree with Michael’s review. I hadn’t read the book (I might read it now though)….but it was easy enough for me to follow. It was very creatively done, with great acting (and the 3 little boys had never acted before which I was surprised to hear). There was some excellent cinematography, good music as I recall although feel I might have to look at it again re the music aspect, it just flowed so well.
“While I know I haven’t seen as many movies as some of you and am more limited since I only went to the theater once this year, for me, this was one of my favorites. As Michael said it’s ‘hard hitting and powerful’. It seemed very real. All aspects of this movie were very well done. 5 cats“
