Kyle says: “ALL THE WILDERNESS is another in a very very long line of films about a troubled teenager resisting the forces of socialization, having withdrawn into a world of his own making following the suicide of his father. The clumsily named James Charm, winningly portrayed by rising young star Kodi Smith-McPhee, makes up future dates of death for boys his own age he hates, but warms to a girl his own age who is similarly rebellious and likes wildlife. The title refers to the place where all creatures go to live but also to die. Danny DeVito has an over-the-top supporting role as a psychiatrist who tries to persuade the withdrawn boy to open up, while Virginia Madsen plays James’s perpetually worried mother. James fantasizes that there is a wolf inside him, as well as other wilderness denizens, but ultimately it is only a shy, needy, sensitive teenager trying to shed his cocoon and take flight. We have seen this story countless times, and this one wears out its welcome ultimately, although there are far worse versions of this same story floating around out there. 3 cats
