Diane says: “This year’s version of the show compiled by Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt doesn’t reach the quality of the earlier one I saw. The best of the 12 shorts is Ward 13, an inexplicably successful horror Claymation. Also very good are FEDS, a docu in the WAKING LIFE animation style–oh, what do you know, it’s by Jennifer Drummond who was one of the WAKING LIFE animators–about food demo-ers in Austin, and a 45-second (?) perfectly timed film of fireworks made of candies. The gentle picture book illustration style used in When the Day Breaks is lovely.
“Rock fish has wonderful CGI in a graphic novel kind of dystopia, but the plot is weak. And Pan with Us has a very novel
approach to stop action, where the puppeteer is visible, as it were. I was disappointed by Hertzfeldt’s own entry, The meaning of life. But even some duds shouldn’t keep anyone away from this overview of what is happening in animation. 3 cats.”
