Chris says: “Unfolding over a single day in Milwaukee, Kirill Mikhanovsky’s film follows Vic (Chris Galust), a young medical transport driver and son of Russian immigrants. In addition to getting his own clients from point A to B, he also has to also deal with his determined, trouble-prone grandfather, a cavalcade of irritated elderly folks from his home country trying to get to a burial, the incendiary owner of a car he sideswipes, an unwanted couch and a mounting, racially-charged protest blocking off roads in the city’s African-American community.
“To focus on multiple populations that aren’t affluent, white and/or fully abled in one of the country’s most segregated major cities, Mikhanovsky, an immigrant himself, is making a blatant move to show what connects us as humans despite our differences. However, he’s smart enough to understand differences are still differences and the complexity of life doesn’t allow for easy answers. His film is ambitious, intense, chaotic and more than a bit messy, especially in its artier moments; however, it’s also funny, lyrical and in a few instances, unexpectedly moving. Galust, Lauren ‘Lolo’ Spencer and Maxim Stoyanov (the latter kind of a Russian Will Arnett), all of them novice actors, give excellent performances. GIVE ME LIBERTY is an American indie you should seek out. 4.5 cats
