Michael says: “The one-line synopsis on the Internet Movie Database for WE ARE LITTLE ZOMBIES states, ‘Four Japanese orphans form a rock band.’ While that statement is a fact, it barely scratches the surface of this fun, colorful, frankly, insane debut feature from Japanese writer/director, Makoto Nagahisa. When four children eat at the crematorium, their parents killed in a variety of tragic events, they band together in their numbing grief and form a band. When their first song, ‘We Are Little Zombies’, reflecting their emotional state, becomes a viral hit, they are propelled on a journey of stardom all while struggling to keep their true emotions very deep. The vagaries of fame send them on a journey that ultimately leads to a catharsis that allows them to deal with their tragedies.

“While the story sounds grim, Nagahisa’s execution shows a manic, anarchy of action set in a technicolor world that looks like they are living in a Sega video game. Each of the four children bring their own emotional states, centered on Hikari, a young boy whose parents were killed in a bus accident on their way to a rare idyllic vacation spot. Hikari’s emotions threaten to overwhelm him, but he is also adept at burying them deep until a brush with death allows him access to his grief. This film is unique in its handling of grief, and its presentation of a world governed by electronic entertainment. 4 cats
Bob says: “This is terrific. Totally audacious sound, visuals, attitude. Why shouldn’t life be like a video game?”
