Thom says: “Charming Mads Mikkelsen was present for the Q&A after the viewing and he regaled us with stories about how hard it was to work with director Refn. This existential, religious, even metaphysical film is about a group of Norsemen headed in a boat towards a promised land. Going along for the ride is a mysterious, mythical figure (Mikkelsen) who appears to have the right answers. Scotland and its most rugged-terrain take the place of Scandinavia for the filming. The film is almost indecipherable which leads me to my strongest objection to this bizarre, unforgettable work. The ending rather takes away from the strength of what precedes it, but it would be most unfair of me to go into details. The film is also slow & bleak, but that enhanced the films take on history. 4 1/2 cats”
