Thom says: “Unfortunately, this turned out to be Patricia Highsmith-light. There’s been quite a few high-quality films that have been made from her works including THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, THE CRY OF THE OWL (twice, even once by Chabrol), PURPLE NOON, THE AMERICAN FRIEND, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, & RIPLEY’S GAME, so with the excellent cast I had high hopes. First-time feature film director Amini has superb production values, and he gets amazing performances from languorous Dunst and especially a reinvented Mortensen who is going to age as an actor just fine & is at his very best here. They play an American couple on-the-run through Europe after a massive securities fraud. They by chance run across a young, obvious grifter (Isaac) who they decide to hook up with for no discernible purpose. While there is some cat-and-mouse fun between the three characters with the usual finagling the film is so predictable that any hope of fun surprises are long gone mid-point of this otherwise classy production. It was fun to see all the European hot-spots, gorgeously photographed. 3.5 cats”
