Philip says: “The 1930’s shone a little brighter thanks to the adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s novel, The Thin Man serialized for the big screen by director  W.S. ‘Woody’ Van Dyke. Stars William Powell and Myrna Loy as carefree sleuths Nick and Nora Charles had pitch perfect banter and between the two of them drank enough booze to make even Bill W. blush. Ah, the good old days. This series is so much fun. If you ever wondered whether people had any fun pre-1960’s, check out the first installment in the Thin Man series. There are moments it runs a bit flat but only when the plot separates Nick and Nora. This is really their film. Myrna’s costumes are incredible, but it is the chemistry between Powell and Loy that makes this film a classic. Hard to believe it was filmed 80 years ago. If you haven’t traveled back in time recently, you really owe it to yourself to spend some time with the Charles. You’ll be sure to envy their love, their capacity to hold liquor, and their love of a good mystery. With their trusty dog Asta by their side, what more can one movie need? 4.5 cats
