Michael says: “Often mentioned as one of the best examples of film noir, I thought I should check out this novel adaptation from 1946. An entertaining romp, to be sure, but it doesn’t have the charisma and appeal as those Bogie & Bacall films. The plot of pure noir — the owner of a diner hires a drifter to work at his store, but the drifter and the store owner’s wife can’t deny their attraction, and soon a murder plot is afoot. The main reason to enjoy THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE is for Lana Turner’s all-in performance. Unfortunately, given the shifts in the writing, Turner’s all-in sometimes doesn’t make a lot of sense when she suddenly changes her mind. Also fun to see Hume Cronyn as a defense lawyer for Turner’s character in the latter half of the film. 3 cats“
