Michael says: “THE NEST tells the story of a family that is falling apart due to the pressures and excesses of the late 1980’s culture. Rory and Allison O’Hara are living the good life, enough money for a gorgeous home in Upstate New York, and a close-knit family. Rory has one of those ill-defined jobs from that era involving the buying and selling of companies for other companies. He made a good fortune working in NYC but is currently between jobs, playing the house-husband, while Allison works training horses. When Rory comes to Allison with the job of a lifetime, it involves them moving to London. Allison is very reluctant to move, and the first warning bells start to ring as she references previous moves and a bit of a pattern that has grown wearisome. Yet, move they do, setting up shop in a massive old mansion where Rory is welcomed back to his old firm, but in a new position. Allison spends her time with her own horse, and with setting up a home that is far too large, and quite a bit creepy, for her family. As Rory’s plan starts to unravel, weird things start to happen at home. This is the beauty of Durkin’s film, it’s set up like a horror film, but the spirit that is haunting them is wealth and success.

“Durkin and his team make good use of the house and grounds, flipping back and forth between the wheeling and dealing of high-powered dinners and parties to the eerie isolation, and long, dark corridors of home. The true strength of the film lay in the two lead performances by Jude Law and Carrie Coon. Law has matured from a golden-boy, movie star idol, to a fine character actor, ready to tackle complex roles. Carrie Coon has been exciting to watch in the last few years, between her stint in ‘The Leftovers’ and smaller films like STRANGE WEATHER. The pair are formidable, he, with his duplicity and need to succeed, she with he righteousness and steely resolve. Their kids, played by Oona Roche and Charlie Shotwell handle some complex parts themselves, and do a fine job  rounding out this troubled family. The film ends on an interesting note, where nothing is resolved, but something has shifted. Durkin’s follow-up to MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE is another quiet, simmering drama exploring the psyches different types of families. 4 cats
