Michael says: “TAMMY’S ALWAYS DYING isn’t very original, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Catherine MacDonald doesn’t live the most glamorous life. She works as a bartender at her father’s hole in the wall; her mother is an alcoholic who needs to be talked off the local bridge every month when her welfare checks stop, and while Catherine dreams of success… at anything… the most she can muster is the fantasy that she might appear one day on the cheesy talk show that makes successes out of sad sacks who’ve had it rough. When Catherine’s mother, Tammy, is diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, Catherine moves back into her childhood home to take care of her. Then her dreams start to come true, when the producer of her dream talk show thinks she can turn Catherine’s life into small screen success.TAMMY’S ALWAYS DYING is a Canadian version of that standard Hollywood trope of bad parenting eventually leads to a reconciliation with their children when the end is near, or tragedy looms. TAMMY is a few steps above that for a couple of reasons.

“First and foremost if Felicity Huffman in the role of Tammy. She’s a mess, for sure, and her growth as a character (which, of course, does inevitably arrive) doesn’t seem cheap, or easy, or false. That’s due in part duo Huffman’s strength as an actor. Canadian actress Aanstasia Phillips does a good job as Catherine as well. Her frustration with her dead-end life seems lived in, and her change in direction are handled believably. First-time feature director, Amy Jo Johnson, (an actor who made her splash as the Pink Ranger in MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS) does her best to keep things real without becoming maudlin, and ends up creating a good film that travels familiar territory. 3 cats
