Michael says: “A gentle film about a gay couple who are dealing with dementia. Sam and Tusker have been together for decades, and as Tusker begins to succumb to the dementia that he was diagnosed with two years prior, the pair travel around England in an RV, visiting friends and family. Tusker is an author, working on a new novel, but his ailment is preventing him for progressing. Sam is a concert pianist who has given up his career and wants only to spend time with his husband and care for him. Tusker has other ideas though, and when Sam finds out the heart of the drama is exposed.
“Much has been made of the casting of Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci as Sam and Tusker — two high profile actors telling this tale of love and devotion during the later years of life while struggling with such a hardship. Firth is particularly strong as Sam, feeling alternatively helpless and determined to keep Tusker moving forward. Tucci is a bit too affected for my tastes, and took me out of some of the more tender scenes. In the end, while moving and well-paced, something was missing for me. SUPERNOVA ended up more like a television weepie film of the week that kept me distanced from the characters. 3 cats“
