Michael says: “POSER starts off promisingly enough, with Lennon, a introverted young woman who starts a podcast to profile the indie musicians populating the vibrant Columbus, OH music scene. She attends shows and interviews a variety of musicians, adding in her insightful observations and painting a colorful local music scene. Lennon is particularly captivated by Bobbi Kitten, one-half of a provocative, successful indie due , with a larger than life personality and confidence to spare. As Bobbi welcomes Lennon into her circle, a dark obsession begins to grow unnoticed to those around them.

“Sylvie Mix is effective as Lennon. Quiet, lacking confidence, she is an observer that gradually morphs into an active participant. Scenes with her sister are strong, illustrating the complex relationship they have with their wealthy parents, and Lennon essentially being financially supported as she finds her path. When Lennon begins to display creative talents in songwriting, she is reluctantly drawn out to share her work with others. As the film progresses, it’s not until nearly three-quarters of the way through that we discover the meaning of the film’s title, and it’s also around that point where the film starts to fall apart. I started to doubt the effectiveness of the screenplay, and the ability of these two men, writer and director, to skillfully handle these complex women. Things spiral into an indie-music version of SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, and an ending that I’m sure was meant to be ironic and shocking came off as stilted and forced. Sadly, things went so awry, it colored by feelings about the film in its entirety. 2.5 cats
