Thom says: “I’ll easily admit that I’ve been a huge fan of many of Jordan’s films including THE CRYING GAME, THE BUTCHER BOY, MONA LISA, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO, & THE END OF THE AFFAIR, but he’s also bombed with some entries (INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE: THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES, THE GOOD THIEF), and while this isn’t quite that bad, the film is ripped apart with its very conventional ending. The always gorgeous Farrell plays Syracuse a lonely (with those wild looks its a stretch to imagine him lonely) Irish fisherman, raising a crippled daughter, catches a half-dead girl in one of his nets. She appears to be captivated by her rescuer and he is slowly falling in love with her as well, but the mystical elements surrounding her indicate that she might well be a water nymph (where is John Sayles when we need him?). So the film wants to be a fable, and unfortunately fails. Alicia Bachleda is beautiful as Ondine, with a Juliette Binoche quality. Stephen Rea, as the local priest, fits his role like a glove. 3 cats ”
