Thom says: “This got a big publicity push earlier this year and was a minor success. A coming-of-age story about a gay teen boy just coming out is as sweet as all-get-out. Simon is an adorable boy with terrific parents, a wannabe great chef young sister and a lovely group of friends. But up to this point he is only secretly gay with a huge crush on an unknown e-mailer that he has an ongoing dialogue with throughout the film. One of the things the film does best is Simon’s imaginings of the suspected secret crush as candidates arrive and fall by the wayside. Also a cute segment where Simon sees a world where parents would be horrified if their children turn out to be heterosexual is memorable. Regular teenage problems crop-up with delightful interludes and there’s many charming characters but the film’s erstwhile attitude to reality wants it both ways. Still, the quality is so high here that perhaps societies attitudes can continue to change. Tony Hale as an incompetent high school councilor is his usual hilarious self. 4.5 cats“
