Diane says: “I watched this BI Gan film from 2018 in prep for his RESURRECTION, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes last month.
“Luo Hongwu keeps dreaming of a woman from his younger days, and follows clues in search of her. The film is known for a virtuoso single-shot of about an hour, which begins with Luo taking a handcar into the past. When asked how he got there, he replies, ‘I fell asleep in a movie theater.’ Ha!
“The mood and the puzzle aspect put me in mind of ORPHEE and Lynch’s oeuvre. Even aside from the single shot, the cinematography is outstanding. Sometimes we wonder, what is the camera hiding from us?
“I’m not much into puzzle movies these days, tho, so I didn’t love it. And as Luo interrogates his memory, he is often rescuing women and I had my fill of that.
“Kudos for tech aspects, but 3 cats overall.”
