Emily says: “Greg and I caught this documentary film about the band Wilco last night. Though Greg, as a band leader himself, found the film lacking in footage of the ‘making music’ process, for those of you who are interested in the shenanigans of the music business, you might might this film quite good. The background story (for those non-Wilco fans out there) is about a band whose label drops them because they don’t like the album they’ve made, actually go so far as to give them their album back (rather than keep rights to it and suppress its release – the band has a big following and doing such would have been scandalous, though its not unheard of in this industry), and then the band itself gets resigned by a smaller label (owned by the same media giant, Warner, that dropped them!) for 4 times as much money and the record became a smash hit…the film is well made (shot in black and white with a great soundtrack, obviously – if you like Wilco that is), and I found it to be quite an interesting look into the world of band dynamics and music making…” 3 cats
