Diane says: “I think how you much you like Jim Jarmusch’s triptych will depend on your own family dynamics. Are get-togethers awkward, with long silences? Are you boisterous and demonstrative? How well do you know your parents and siblings?
“In the FATHER section, Dad is hilariously played by Tom Waits, his hair striving for Eraserhead height. We know things some characters don’t–what’s that called? dramatic irony?–which builds humor, suspense, and satisfaction when our suspicions are revealed.
“In the second section, Charlotte Rampling is the mum who likes everything in perfect order. We can sense the silent condemnation that her daughter doesn’t pick up on.
“The third section was the most disappointing to me, because of the healthy, loving relationship. Who would make a movie about a healthy, loving relationship??
“Extended shots of urban and rural roads have a self-indulgent longeur.
“3 cats. Includes an extra cat for the casting of many of our favorite actors.”
