Michael says: “I’m not sure what possessed me to watch this film. Could it have been the 100% fresh rating from the (only) 12 critics who reviewed in on Rotten Tomatoes? That might have been it, and it was probably why I was asking myself, What? all the way through. Clearly somewhat autobiographical (there were too many weird specificities for it not to be) DRAMARAMA features a group of nerd, high school drama club kids who are graduating high school and dispersing to various colleges (or not) the next day. They’re having one last slumber party before the dramatic artiste of the bunch leaves for New York City. There’s also a budding opera singer, another actor who has a secret about his post-high school plans, a young Indian woman who is more comfortable back stage than onstage, and our lead (and director stand-in?) who is not leaving town, is the writer of the group, and is trying hard to come out to his friends. What makes this even harder than it might be is the fact that they’re all kind of conservatively Christian? Not in a evangelical way, but in a kind of weirdly prudish way. If it sounds weird, it kind of is, it’s also clumsily written and not very funny, and the graduates come off like junior high kids, while the bad boy pizza delivery boy is kind of hot, kind of full of himself, and totally unbelievable when he starts quoting classic literature. 100% fresh? I rate give it 1 1/2 cats.”
